Facing her Future Courageously
Eumina Andres is a mother in the Philippines. She grew up in poverty, and had no opportunity for a formal education. She dreams for a better life for her children-- a safe place for them to live, better education, and good health. Eumina, like every good mother, wants to contribute to her family’s well-being and growth in every way she can.
Eumina’s husband, Rolly, is a pump boat driver. Although he works hard, he does not earn enough money for Eumina’s worthy dreams to become realities. For awhile, Eumina contributed to the family income by selling native delicacies and fish house-to-house. This soon had to stop, due to a lack of growth and capital. Life for Eumina and her family was difficult, and Eumina felt inadequate.
In 2004, Eumina heard about Mentors. She obtained her first loan. She began buying and selling fish again. Eumina experienced success as she made a profit, paid back her loan and qualified for new loans. She attended Mentors’ trainings, which helped her continually expand her business.
“I appreciate Mentors’ training,” Eumina said. “I am learning the discipline, principles, and values needed to start a small business. I have gained insights that inspire me to face my future courageously and live better than before.”
Now, Eumina is on her 11th loan cycle. Her dreams are slowly coming true. She and her husband have a combined income that has allowed her to enroll her children in school and repair her unsafe house. Eumina even has a savings account—something she didn’t understand before Mentors came into her life.
