Although they were educated, Judith Luces and her husband Clemente could not find gainful employment in the Philippines where they lived.  In order to generate some income, they started up a small sari-sari store in their backyard.  Their weekly revenue from the store was about $15 - an amount significantly short of what they needed to adequately provide for their family.

Then, things began to change.  In 2007 Judith was introduced to Mentors International by a friend.  She was enthusiastic to join when she learned about the credit program and its benefits, which were designed to help the poor rise out of poverty.  Judith received an initial micro loan, which she used to buy materials and invest more thoroughly in her business.  Because of that initial micro loan, Judith was able to triple her family's income.  Her and Clemente purchased a refrigerator and a motorcycle which they use to buy and deliver goods.  Judith has slowly saved $50 in her personal savings and $60 in her group savings.

Due in part to the business training she received from her mentor, Judith has always paid her loans on time and has demonstrated sound management of her projects.  As a result, she has been successful in her business.  She and Clemente now have goals to further expand by purchasing supplies in bulk and buying a delivery truck.  Judith has expressed sincere gratitude to the Mentors staff and to those who contribute donations for bringing the program to their community.  She says it has allowed her to feed and educate her children with dignity.
